I am poor and I'm trying to rustle up a bolognaise type sauce with only basic ingredients. I usually buy a Dolmio sauce for spag bol but I havent one. I have mince, tinned tomatoes, an onion, tomato puree and herbs...would that work? How would I stop it from being too runny/watery? Any receipes please...

Yes that would work. You could also add garlic. To stop it from being runny or too watery you could mouli/puree the tinned tomatoes before they go in and then cook with the mince on a low heat for a minimum of an hour (pref two). Also, for max flavour eat it the next day.

Other tips: bayleaf works well (take it out before serving). Finely chopped celery and/or carrot added with the chopped onions and garlic.

Anchovies/olives/chopped mushrooms give it more depth.

Pinch of dried red chilli is also good.

Yes - that's all you need - well that's all I ever use anyway!

Chop up the onions and soften them, then add the mince until it's browned. Then add the tinned tomatoes, puree, herbs, worcestershire sauce if you have it and let it simmer. Simmering it on the hob with the lid off will help it thicken as the water will evaporate off. Alternatively, if you've got any gravy granules, adding some of those will help thicken it up too, and give it a nice flavour.

Thanks for the ideas
