I love my slow cooker. I only got it a couple of months ago and can't believe I lived without it for so many years.

dylsmum1998 · 15/03/2009 20:57

i love roasted meats in my slow cooker, absolutely gorgeous

rookiemater · 15/03/2009 20:58

OOh we have just got a brand new extra large slow cooker after DH put our old one on the gas ring to heat up a chilli . How does one roast a chicken in it ?

dylsmum1998 · 15/03/2009 21:00

i just put a chicken in and cook it all day on slow. dont add anything.
i tend to put chicken in oven for half hour roughly cos i like crispy skin

blossomsmine · 15/03/2009 21:05

I was told to season the chicken and rub all over with olive oil, which i did. Then threw it in the slow cooker for three hours on high and about six on low, it was only a small chicken. I couldn't believe the amount of juice that i ended up with at the end of the cooking time, the gravy was apparantley lovely!!
I love my slow cooker too
Anyone roasted a beef joint in it? I would like to do that next. Or maybe a rice pudding??

ginnny · 15/03/2009 21:09

I've never done a chicken in mine because I like the crispy skin, but joints of beef are gorgeous. So easy too - I just plonk the beef about 11 on Saturday night and it's ready to eat by Sunday lunchtime. The juices that come out make fantastic gravy too!

worley · 15/03/2009 21:14

do you not have to add any liquids to it? i brought one a few weeks ago and have done some lovely stews and casseroles so far. but it says, in my book that came with it, the things in it have to be covered with stock.??

blossomsmine · 15/03/2009 21:14

Thanks for that ginny we don't eat until Sunday evenings, would you say it would be ok to put it in on Saturday night??

Regarding the chicken, i just popped it in the oven for about ten minutes, whilst serving up the rest of the dinner and the skin was really crispy!!

Oh, forgot to ask, ginny what cut of beef would you say is best to roast in a slow cooker?? Being a veggie i am not really 'up' on all that lol!

dylsmum1998 · 15/03/2009 21:16

worley i have done all kinds of joints in mine, (beef, chicken, pork, gammon, lamb) never added any juices as the meat has enough of its own.

blossomsmine · 15/03/2009 21:16

Worley, if you are asking about the roast chicken, the answer is NO!!! I was worried about that aswell, but the instruction i read said add no liquid, i was amazed by the amount of juice in the slow cooker!!! it was nearly up to the top!!

blossomsmine · 15/03/2009 21:17

dylsmum, you got any suggestions on meat dishes other than casseroles??

OP posts:
dylsmum1998 · 15/03/2009 21:21

i do diff. meat curries, have done spag bol (don't eat that tho but am told it tasted good!)
i do a variety of diff casseroles (try adding paprika to beef for example adds a little warmth)

worley · 15/03/2009 21:29

thankyou, i will try that next week then i think mmmm mouth watering already. i love my slow cooker so far

blossomsmine · 15/03/2009 21:34

I did spag bol aswell, my lot like it too Will do the paprika thing, thanks.

I've got some braising steak lurking about in my freezer, thought i might get that out and do a kind of red wine/mushroom thing with it tomorrow.

The good thing about it is that you can use really cheap cuts of meat as it is cooked so long it goes really tender anyway.
I have put it on low on Saturday night and left it till Sunday tea time or you could put it on first thing Sunday morning depending how early you get up. IME the longer its cooked for the better.
And no, you don't have to add any liquid.
Gammon joints are nice in the slow cooker too.

stealthsquiggle · 16/03/2009 10:34

blossomsmine - definitely try rice pudding - so easy and so cheap.

Hmm - could try chicken tomorrow.

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 16/03/2009 10:47

I've just put lamb shanks in mine - with two tins of cannellini beans, red onions, peppers, tomatoes and spices. I reckon on getting two meals out of that - one mainly lamb and one mainly beans.

blossomsmine · 16/03/2009 23:51

Lamb shanks sounds a good idea Also will try the gammon.

With the rice pudding, would you just add the same amounts as if you were doing it in the oven?

I did braising steak with mushrooms/bacon/onion and redwine tonight, smelt delicious!

I bought pork ribs today as i am sure someone mentioned on here about doing them with bbq sauce, will have to have a look for instructions!

Not only is the slow cooker economical it is really encouraging me to make different things instead of the same old boring things i usually do!!

whole chicken cooks lovely in slow cooker doesn't it. I was also sceptical of not putting any water in to start with, but you really don't need to.
I find it so much easier than a roast as somehow the timings aren't so crucial.

I'm not so good with stews though .

Doing minced beef tomorrow, will just put leave the mince in all day and do some mash to go with it at tea time.

likessleep · 17/03/2009 08:55

for those who've done roast beef, is the beef tender?
i've done loads of casseroles and soups, but not yet tried roasts.
i love roast chicken, but find roast beef very tough (only eaten meat in last 6 months after 18 years of being veggie!). so i wondered if roasting in slow cooker might make it more tender?

Ledodgy · 17/03/2009 09:26

I have a small chicken if I put it in now and want it at around 5.30 pm how many hours should I put it on high or low for?

JackBauer · 17/03/2009 09:29

Ledodgy, put it on low at about 11ish.
But my hint is to cut a potato into large chunks and rest teh chicken on that, that way most of the stock stays under the chicken!
If you have a lemon try cutting it in 4, shoving 2 bits inside and squeeze the other over the top and dump them in. Just adds a bit of tang.
I ladle out the stock about half an bhour before serving and make gravy just by reducing it on it's own, it's luuuurvely!

Furball · 17/03/2009 09:30

likessleep - I did a joint of brisket in my slow cooker. the meat ended up sooooo tender it literally fell apart so much I couldn't carve it. Absolutely delicious

Ledodgy · 17/03/2009 09:39

Thanks JB but i've just realised my chicken is too big for my slow cooker!
