Slow cooker - possibly stupid question

We've just bought a Breville slow cooker from Argos - used it for the first time yesterday and are now total converts! But the outside of the cooker got very hot, and I wondered if this was normal? I haven't really thought through the physics, but I would have expected it to stay cool, like the outside of our toaster does. (Although the toaster possibly only stays cool because it's not in use for seven hours straight!) Can someone reassure me, please?

Hmmm... well, I checked the manual, which says nothing, except don't touch the hot bits with your bare hands - but doesn't specify which bits should get hot. The Argos description says it has a "cool touch body", but that could just be Argos getting it wrong.

Just we just need to teach DS that he musn't touch.
