Chocolate Cake

Not sure if this is the best place but I thought that as you lot are good cooks you'd know... a slightly odd workmate brought in a massive (about 45cm by 20cm or so - not that good with length, but big) chocolate cake and claimed she'd made it. However, it had a very 'shiny' appearance and was quite wet in texture (though not dense) and despite being very dark in colour didn't really taste cocoa-y. Do you think it might have been shop bought? I'm not going to do anything horrid like denounce her baking, I'm just suspicious! Thanks.

it sounds like my vegan chocolate cake

dizzydixies · 02/03/2009 21:52

just because she brought you in a nice big moist cake you're suspicious

am sure it might have been shop bought but it also might have been homemade - I make stuff and send it in all the time as it helps me practise without ending up like the side of a house

does it really matter - you got a slice of cake either way

Any properly baked cake should have that texture. Mine does.

Oh no! Sorry - I should have given more detail. She's a bit of a fantasist, and in my opinion she is getting a bit nasty with it, trying to top everyone else's stories and achievements at every turn. The massive cake was brought in to celebrate her own birthday - two days after another workmate had brought in some perfectly normal (ie slightly crispy at edges) cookies she'd baked and passed round, and which this woman then commented on very loudly. I'm just suspicious her cake was some sort of one-up thing and that she hadn't really cooked it! Sorry to ask but do you have any links to the vegan choc cake recipe so I can see what it's like?

You could always trot around the local supers and check out their tray bake range to compare and contrast.Although she may have made it from a packet mix, they taste more shop bought.

Sadly we're in London - would have to trek to her neck of woods to do that. Hadn't considered packet mixes though... cheers! Sorry, it sounds so petty but my friend and I have had enough and this one little thing would make us feel much better - can you believe she really slyly asked my mate if her 6yo had made the cookies?? Cheeky mare!

Maybe - though she's been there over a year. I feel really mean posting now!
