I want to make a beef and ale casserole, so far i'm thinking of putting in the following:-

carrots
onions
celery?
beef
Beef stock
Boddingtons - can i use this?

Can anyone advise me what else i should put?, chopped tomatoes?, tomatoe puree?
Can i put the beef in raw or should i brown it first? It will be cooking in the slow cooker all day tomorrow so will have plenty of time to cook.

Thanks

I don't have a slow cooker, but I do a similar casserole in the oven. I think a can of Boddingtons sounds good, I've done one with a can of Guinness successfully before. I'd probably also add a bit of tomato puree, and some mustard powder if you have any in.

Personally, I always brown the meat first, but I don't think it really needs it, it'll certainly be thoroughly cooked without.
