Hi, I have a container full of it in the cupboard but have lost the packet/ instructions. Anyone know how to cook it?
TIA

Good luck with that. I'd probably boil it on salted water and use it as a replacement for couscous or pasta.
Anyone got Gillian McKeith's book/phone number? She'd know!!!!!!

RinkyDinkyPinky · 02/03/2009 20:15

Lol KC; there must be someone else, other than me and Gilly that has quinoa.
C'mon you healthy goddess types!

Cook for 20 mins in water that is already boiling.
1 vol quinoa to 3 parts water.
I like to cook min in stock for added flavour.

thank you!

add butter and salt
throw in bin

Spidermama · 02/03/2009 21:44

I do one part quinoa to two parts stock.

likessleep · 03/03/2009 15:38

i just boil in water and when it is cooked, drain. takes about 15 mins or so.
nice with ratatouille!

alarkaspree · 03/03/2009 15:41

Agree with muffle. It's edible, but you will never make it taste good.

Kewcumber · 03/03/2009 15:44

no no. The correct thread title is

"why would I cook quinoa"

Kewcumber · 03/03/2009 15:46

1 - rinse first
2 - then rinse agin
3 - then rinse again
4 - then repeat steps 1-3 until you lose the will to live and have forgotten your own name
5 - boil for 15 mins
6 - bin
7 - cook lovely pasta and eat instead.

I've cooked it like risotto, ie saute some onions, celery, peppers, garlic, whatever else you have lying about in the fridge in some olive oil, add quinoa and saute for another couple of mins, then add stock gradually until the little grains have swollen and the little seedy sprouty bit is visible (it's tiny so you may need to get a few on a spoon to have a look) Then you can add whatever else you like, some chicken, other meat, seasoning, herbs etc etc. DS loves it and it's super good for you, very good source of protein.

sfxmum · 03/03/2009 15:48

I do 1part quinoa 2 parts water bring to boil then simmer, I also add it to casseroles or mix with puy lentils flavoured with fried onions and sometimes bacon

Peachy · 03/03/2009 15:51

Funny coz my immediate thought was 'decant straight into bin'- obviosuly hav eless time for intermediaries than you lot

Othersideofthechannel · 03/03/2009 16:25

Yes, risotto style is good too.

I really like quinoa

SuperBunny · 05/03/2009 01:47

Please, please, please wash it well before you cook it. Lots of people don't then complain that it doesn't taste good but if you prepare it properly, it is delicious.

  1. Rinse well - in sieve for several minutes under running tap
  2. Put in pan with twice as much stock as quinoa
  3. Boil then simmer til the tails are obvious (about 15 - 20 mins or so).
  4. Yum

Risotto style also good. Can be eaten warm or cold, just like couscous and rice.

alipiggie · 05/03/2009 03:41

so to add to SB's. Here's one for you. Cover with the water and add two stock cubes easier, and then a tin of coconut milk. Cook as in step 3. Fabulous. Much nicer than rice in my humble opinion.

RinkyDinkyPinky · 05/03/2009 12:16

I'm a quinoa convert!
Tis lovely stuff- I boiled with a bit of Thai 5-spice and had with a winter veg stir-fry.
C'mon you sceptics- don't let McKeith put you off, give it a go!
Loving the coconut milk and risotto ideas. Will try them next.

Like this:

Go into your kitchen.
Pick up the packet.
Lift the lid of the bin.
Chuck quinoa in bin.
Close lid.
Ring Domino's.

WilfSell · 05/03/2009 12:25

Ah, see muffle got there before me

WilfSell · 05/03/2009 12:26

And kewcumber
And peachy

You can't argue with common sense.

Kewcumber · 06/03/2009 00:52

though I thought Domino's pizza was a nice touch, Will. Will had that to my quinoia recipe back of fag packet book

RinkyDinkyPinky · 06/03/2009 14:39

Pah! Domino's shizza I think not! If you must do pizza it can only be Pizza Express then send the butler/ DH/ DC out to pick it up.
