fondant/sugarpaste is squashy like play d'oh

The stuff you make models out of? Pretty sure that is fondant.

Royal icing is the Xmas cake stuff that goes hard

I don't bake much these days, but my mum used to do a lot of cake decorating.

Royal Icing is egg white, lemon juice and icing sugar. Fondant is the same with glycerine in it to prevent it from going hard.
