I am trying to make a fruit cake which has to be made by tomorrow morning. My options are to get up ridiculously early and go on a hunt around town for some very odd shaped batteries to put in the scales, or try and make cake sans scales. It is a fruit cake, mums old recipe and is normally very easy to make. Needs a bag of mixed fruit which is no problem to bung in a big pan, but how do I know how to measure the sugar or flour or marg?? All of the stuff is in new packets so I was thinking I could roughly guess the amounts, but will this result in a culinary disaster?!

A rounded dessertspoon of flour is 10grams - I've experimented when measuring flour before and it is surprisingly consistent

What's the worst that could happen!? Best of luck - it'll probably turn out the best cake you have ever made and everyone will be asking for the recipe, and you can honestly say "what this, just something I threw together"!
