I am tempted but have come across lots of very different recipes and some of them are a real faff. Does anyone on here have an easy recipe?

Hi S/Bunny, kids in bed now, recipe from Mrs Beeton: Rub 2 oz butter onto 14oz strong white bread flour, add tbsp dried fast-action yeast, 2 oz sugar, tsp salt, 1.5tsp ground mixed spice, half tsp each cinnamon and grated nutmeg, 4 oz currants, 2 oz peel. Beat 1 egg into 4fl oz warmed milk (blood temp), add to dry mixture and knead to soft dough. Add more milk if needed to make dough soft. I've been making my dough so soft its too sticky to get out of bowl, just knead well in bowl for 5 - 10 mins till elastic and soft. Cover in plastic and leave in warm place to rise till doubled in size.

Tip out of bowl onto floured table, cut into buns and place in greased baking tray, make crosses with flour/water paste, cover again and rise 15mins in warm place then bake very hot oven 15 - 20 mins, glaze with boiled sugar/water glaze while hot.

Mrs Beeton had fast-action yeast?

LGoodLife · 27/02/2009 09:31

Mrs Beeton is supercalifragilisticexpialidotious!!!! In my edition, given to me when I Left Home, she has magimixes and microwaves and all sorts! MdmDeathstare, I agree, they don't take long to do any of the mixing/kneading, you don't have to stand and watch it rise!

I did it! I made the peel and it's delicious. Hot Cross Buns in the next week or so!

My mum always made delicious hot cross buns. I have used the same recipe to make them a couple of times but they have turned out nothing alike unfortunately. (Tasted okay (though not right) but texture more sconeish.) Don't know if it is because she had a nice warm airing cupboard to leave them to rise in or any other random reason. Might try them one more time though!
