Aubergine question

Am about to make a ratatouille (SP!) from a recipe in a baby food book - but it just says to chop the aubergine up and cook. I thought you had to do something else to it or it wouldn't taste nice? As you can see I am an aubergine novice!

Some recipes say to put salt on after slicing to sweat the water out. Not all do, think it's OK not to if recipe doesn't say so.

I think a few years ago they were quite bitter, but ones nowadays are ok to just use without the salting. I've never salted one beforehand.
