Web based Restaurant Guides - Anyone know any?

I'm off to Stratford-upon-Avon tomorrow for a romantic weekend with dh minus dd (who is off to a party with her Nana). I'd hoped to book a restaurant for tomorrow night but don't know the place and can't think of any restaurant guides. Preferably I'd prefer online as its a bit late to start buying books.

Thanks for any help anyone can give.

Try www.stratford-on-avon.co.uk and go to restaurants! There's one called wills Place!!

DH swears by www.toptable.co.uk - we are in London though so I am not sure if they cover Stratford-on-Avon. Enjoy your weekend!

Batey - that site didn't work. I copied it directly from your posting but it sent me to a "buy this site for ..." place.

CP - I can see why your dh likes that site and it has been duly added to my Favourites. Unfortunately it doesn't list many in Stratford and those it does list I daren't go to. Between my pregnancy and my recently discovered nut allergy I think there are more things I can't eat than can. Basically I have to rule out all Asian food (my favourite of course!). Thanks for the site though, I live and work in London and suspect that I will be using it a lot from now on.

Sorry to hijack your thread but on the subject of restaurants .... DH is treating me to a birthday weekend in London, has anyone any suggestions for good restaurants? I had thought of Jamie Oliver's new place but as they never answer the phone I can't be bothered ... where do London mumsnetters like to eat out? We shall be staying in Bloomsbury. We have fairly wide tastes - but like BIG meals not poncy 'nouveau cuisine' - if that's still around!!

hello wills

what a coincidence! i went to stratford with a friend a couple of weeks ago.

unfortunately i can't recommend restaurants first hand - we were staying at a posh hotel out of town and had dinner there, but i have found this and hope it is useful.

in case you want to go out of town, the place we stayed was billesley manor - i would recommend it as a place to eat (with reservations, as i am a jaded london restaurant goer - pre ds of course!)

unrelated to eating - i really recommend a matinee at the theatre - whatever is on! and a trip out to mary arden's house at wilmcote.

hth and have a wonderful time!

lindy, the ivy is what springs to mind, booked up months in advance for dinner but is much more available for weekend lunches.

otherwise, try rules in covent garden, a traditional british restaurant, which always scores highly in the press.

other than that, i would try a fish place - lots to choose from - fish!, livebait or wheelers, for example.

italian, spanish or greek places also have - er - "hearty" fare - let me know if those interest you and i can recommend a couple.

can look in timeout guide to eating and drinking if necessary!

hth and hope you have a great time!

Rules in Cov Gdn - gosh that brings back memories. Of a long lazy alcohol-fuelled birthday treat lunch with an ex, surrounded by some stuffed shirts whose conversation got louder and less discreet the more they drank!

Had a great time though - had booked the whole afternoon off work.

bossykate · 04/04/2003 20:43

have realised that with 2 messages on this thread have not actually answered the question!

restaurant guides

www.timeout.com
www.hardens.com
www.zagat.com

or what i have found useful for new areas just go to www.google.co.uk and type in "restaurants in ....." and see where that leads.

hth and good luck - wills and lindy hope you have great weekends.

Lindy · 04/04/2003 20:47

Thanks bossykate & suew - I like your description of my 'hearty' appetite - no wonder I am so overweight!! Just thinking about how many meals we can fit in over one weekend .......... !!!!!!

Childcare is getting a little easier .. so I would love to meet you for a weekday 'lunch in the city' at some point, I'll keep checking the meet-up threads!

www.squaremeal.co.uk is good too. Used to be just London, but they've now extended to the whole UK (I think)
