How do i make a vegetable stew?

My mother has just dropped round a big bag of tinned veg, think i'll shove it all in a stew for tonight.

So how do i do this? Stew has never turned out good for me, turns into a big watery mess.

I find the trick is always to put in less water than you think, as the veg will release their own juices as they stew. Not sure about using tinned veg, I usually just throw in whatever's in the bottom of the fridge (having precooked anything hard like potatoes, carrots in the steamer) plus a tin of tomatoes and a splash of red wine, spices etc then leave to simmer until all lovely and stewy...

With tinned veg I would suggest draining it all first otherwise it will be really sloppy.

add gravy granules and tomato puree to thicken it up (and add flavour). if the veg is tinned i presume it will already be cooked (soft) so maybe don't cook it for too long...

So how much water do i start with?

I've only ever done it with fresh veg and that usually goes wrong and drowns, so tinned veg is going to be even worse.

Possibly do soup instead? At least that's meant to be liquidy...

i could start off making stew, but if i mess it up will call it soup. Good idea.

i would say just enough water to cover it then sprinkle over gravy granules when it's hot and stir.

good idea to make soup too.

Ok.

Thank you!

To thicken it up at the end add a teaspoon of cornflour mixed with a small amount of cold water stir in and cook for about another 10 minutes.
