PEELING FRUIT FOR A 1 YR OLD

Hi, my ds is 1yr & 2 weeks. He eats unpeeled grapes and plums, but I still peel pears and citrus fruits. When is it safe to stop peeling pears and citrus? Also, when is a safe time to give him raw apples-should I dice, grate, slice thinly, give it o him whole to gnaw or wait until later? He has 2 bottom and 2 top teeth, another top 2 soon to appear.

I stopped peeling fruit when he started taking the potatoes out of the basket and eating them raw. He was bout 8 months at this age. I let him try everything even the skin of oranges etc so he can experience different, tastes textures. I tend to be around whenever he is eating no matter what it is.

I did hear a horror story of a woman who left her child with grapes and came back to find they had choked because it lodged in windpipe. Not a nice story but I don't think the skin on or off actually affected this.

Go for it and and she will tell you if she likes it or not.

Meanmum, thanks. He does like a good lemon peel so maybe unpeeled "normal" fruit will be OK. I too only feed him anything whilst I am within Heimlich manoevre distance!

Raw apples are certainly fine by 1yr. Just chop them into finger food cubes or slices. If the skin's really tough you may need to peel them first. When his hands are big enough and he's dextrous enough, let him chew on a whole one and see what happens.

My 2 never ate fruit, no matter how I offered it to them. They drink pure fruit smoothies which is the closest I can get.

Sorry I said she instead of he.

Soupdragon, he holds a whole peeled pear and banana in his hand and normally consumes in one go without letting it touch the table, so I think I will try unpeeled fruit now.
Thanks all for the confidence boost!

I have never peeled any fruit (excepting bananas / oranges obviously). I did halve grapes until recently (ds is 18 months). We have a lot of trouble with apples though. No matter how I give them too him - whole - chopped - sliced, he always seems to choke on it. Not enough to need a Heimlich manoeuvre yet but still worrying. Any thoughts?
