What goes with french onion soup?

Having a three course meal on wednesday, nothing fancy, just family.

I really love the french onion soup recipe i have so would like to have that to start, but what main meal would complement it do you think? Meat, fish, pasta? anything?

Dessert will probably be chocolate based, maybe hot choc souffle. Will that work with onion soup?

Mmmm. Is it a light soup, or a proper bread-and-cheese-filled affair? If the latter, I'd got for a lightish main course, so probably fish.
Hot choc souffle works with everything! Can I come?

It's quite a thin soup and i will serve with a little bread. I don't want everyone filling up on the starter, tho i personally would be happy with a massive bowl of it and nothing else

I've never made choc souffle before but the picture looks amazing and i just have to try it!!

I don't want the main course to be huge either; small but enough and very tasty is what i'm aiming for, so everyone is happy but not uncomfortably full after the three courses.

How about some salmon, or is that very boring?

I now have a huge craving for French onion soup, so thank for that!

I'd do fish after that, I think. And yes to chocolate souffle. Sounds lovely.

do proper croutons instead of bread - cut french stick into diagonal slices, brush with olive oil both sides, bake in oven till crispy, turning once. when they're done scrape across the top of each one with cut clove of garlic, scatter over a little coarse ground salt.

tis whole point of onion soup imnsho

Baguette sliced into circles with melted cheese on top. Delicious.

oooo mileniwmffalcon, croutons, what a great idea and they sound very yummy. Never thought of that!

Boogeek- no salmon not boring at all. And go make some onion soup

Very fussy DS will eat nothing whatever it is, so fish it'll be i think.
