Is it just me or does saffron actually make everything taste vile ?

Am making spicy tomato cod for tonight, recipe says add a teaspoon of saffron which is clearly wrong so put in a few strands. Then remember how much I hate the smell and bitter taste of saffron.

So PAH to the most expensive ingrediant in the world, I'm not using it any more. Anyone like to join me on my ANTISAFFRON rant.

Glad to meet someone else who is unable to appreciate the merits of this hideous spice! I keep thinking the recipe books are wrong and I've put the wrong amount in but anytime I have used it, the taste is horrendous. Yuck.

i do a lot of spanish cooking and it often says "using 50 threads of saffron" like my arse! perhaps 5 or 10, you definitely need to go easy on it! you can buy handy little jars of powder to add to your food in spanish delis that give you the colour but not all the taste!

TeaSleepFood · 09/02/2009 17:51

Can I admit here to not likeing truffles including truffle oil? Not chocolate ones of course, that would be stupid!

TeaSleepFood · 09/02/2009 17:52

Oh, and for spanishy things, I use a little smoked paprika instead of saffron.

BonsoirAnna · 09/02/2009 17:53

I adore the taste and smell of saffron . And truffles.

Ledodgy · 09/02/2009 17:54

I've only ever used it to make pilau rice and it's fine in that.

ProfYaffle · 09/02/2009 18:04

I'm not keen on Saffron, tastes like stainless steel imho.

rookiemater · 09/02/2009 18:23

Ah thanks for the smoked paprika tip Teasleepfood, will stock up on that instead.

I don't really know what truffle oil tastes like. I may have made truffle oil risotto once, does it taste a bit earthy ?

rookie, you can also try using tumeric instead of saffron. It is a good colour substitute but the flavour is different. But you might like it instead, seeing you dislike the saffron taste.

Can't stand the taste of it either. tried Saffron cake when I was little.....revolting

Kathyis6incheshigh · 12/02/2009 10:32

If it's bitter you're probably putting too much in. Agree that a teaspoon would be mad.

Colonelcupcake · 12/02/2009 15:31

I find if you put to much in it can be vile and bitter but I use up to 5 strands and its fine quite nice, I have never tried non chocolate truffles
