Stewing fruit - very dumb question!

If I want to stew some fruit, how do I go about it? I assume I need to put it in water with whatever spices - but how much water is enough?

Sorry I know it's daft!

I'm thinking specifically about trying to rescue the pears and plums slowly dying in my fruit bowl.....

Just a small amount of water in bottom of pan and a lid on, so the fruit steams.

cinnamon

cloves

allspice

ginger

chopped dried fruit nice to add

or honey and red wine mmmmmmmm

I wouldn't do them together though - plums break down beautifully and pretty quickly, whereas pears really don't and are better poached, imo.

I usually add a small spoon of brown sugar to my stewed plums, just enough water to cover the base of the pan, and put the lid on and the heat down low. Stir regularly - they don't take that long (about 20 mins tops iirc)

Pears - I don't like them much so don't cook them.

I now have in my fridge some beautiful poached pears and some stewed plums!
The pears I did in white wine so they are for me and DH, the plums I just did in water with cinamon so DS can have those with his yoghurt - yum.
