Carol Deacon has a whole range of books for easy to make novelty cakes, if that's what you're after. Its all about fondant icing, so more for fun, children cakes, but a good base to start and get you interested! Her pictures draw you in and the instructions are clear and very easy to follow.

I have this which is fun, lots of christmas cakes.

I'm doing a cake decorating course and our teacher has recommended this range which I also have, much more old fashioned techniques in there but covers all the general stuff you would use

Australian Women?s Weekly cake books are my absolute all time favourite. I own heaps and heaps of cookery books, from huge weighty Leith?s Bible to the trendy sleb books as well as collect antique ones. I love them all dearly but use the Women?s Weekly the most. Just practical simple recipes with great pics.
I admit to loving Nigella?s Domestic Goddess as a good basic baking book (more a cook than a dessert baker so like the basic style of Nigella and Women?s Weekly - I need pics!!)

Lemontart · 31/01/2009 11:28

sorry - didn?t mean the magazine, meant the AWW cake books. Hope I didn?t get your hopes up! Maybe you can subscibe to the mag though? My DH gets several US mags sent over via subs so a possibility?

Another Women's Weekly (Australian) Party Cake book user here. So, so easy to make.
