It's my ds's first birthday today and I want to make an easy cake for him - just for the family so doesn't have to be big. My cake tins are 20cm - does anyone have a tried and tested recipe?

Do you want just a Victoria Sponge cake or something more adventurous??

Victoria Sponge is good for 20cm cake tins.

Maybe something more adventurous...!

The Tana Ramsey chocolate cake is yum. Very easy, very basic. Fill it with forest fruit jam and smear it with Betty Crocker Chocolate Fudge frosting and decorate accordingly. You can cover it with ready roll icing if you want something 'tidier'. I have made it into a volcano and football pitch so far.

I know it won't help you if you want to do it today but there is a book called Gorgeous Cakes by Annie Bell, every cake I have made from that book has been, well, gorgeous! I made DD the angel cake from it for her birthday, it was relatively easy and tasted fab. And more interesting than a sponge cake.
