Does flour keep fine past its 'best before' date?

I know that BBE dates are just a guide, rather than a use by date, but will stuff still rise ok if I use flour that is well past its BB date?

I have loads of out of date bread flour, some wholemeal SR flour and some other peculiar varieties, and want to know whether to bin it all and start again, or go ahead and use. Don't want to waste the other ingredients that would go in with it if I make something and it's no good.

How well past is it?

CantSleepWontSleep · 22/01/2009 08:43

Definitely none older than 2006, maybe 2007 . Some only a few months past.

I have used flour 12 months out of date. I am a rubbish mother/housekeeper but inherited a hatred of waste from my frugal father! The 2 together don't bode well. Having said that, I have never poisoned/killed anyone.......

It goes off. Also check that it doesn't have weevils as flour is very prone to infestation.

Weevils . WTF does a weevil look like? I sense a lot of flour heading for the bin!

Little black specks that move in the flour . A bit like nits.

BonsoirAnna · 22/01/2009 08:58

Picture and more info on weevils

look for black specks on the inside of bag and on flour on finger.
ime there are usually weevils/beetles so bin it
altho i made weevil fairy cakes once and they weren't bad!

PheasantPlucker · 22/01/2009 09:10

Seriously, mine was fine, no black specks etc etc

2006?? You slattern. Personally, I'd probably shove anything more than 12 months over on the compost heap.
