I need an idea for a birthday cake.

It's my daughter's 6th birthday at the weekend.
She's having a HSM cake for her party but I always make her one for family.
Needs to be easy - I'm not very expert. (And cheap).
All suggestions appreciated.

make a basic sponge( or buy)
bung on icing.
HSM things
and smarties

Its ds birthday on wednesday he is also turning 6

We are doing sponge sandwich and have got blue berries black berried and rasberrys which will be sandwiched together with whipped cream

ds sometimes objects to things being 'too sweet' which is why we do this ( yum for adults too)

What about a pizza? Make a simple sponge and ice it with red buttercream icing (the tomato topping). When I did this for my three, I made toppings out of modelling icing - ham, salami, peppers, mushrooms - and coloured dessicated coconut green for the herbs. I grated yellow modelling icing over the top to be the cheese, and used crystalised pineapple on the Hawaiian one.

It honestly wasn't difficult to do, and I had a lot of fun playing with the modelling icing.

Looks quite easy to do the cut outs and you could simplify the icing

I made DD the hairy bikers chocolate cake for her birthday the other week and it was delicious as well as being pretty straight forward.

It is seriously chocolatey and quite unusual recipe as it has cola in it. I decorated it with smarties and white choc buttons.

I put chocolate buttercream icing and cherry jam in the middle instead of the whipped cream.
