rice dishes for my lo . . . .any new suggestions?

She'll quite happily eat risottos with chicken/veg/mushrooms or whatever goes in them, a rice dish I've only made once with a small amount of curry in it went down very well as well.

Can anyone suggest any other dishes where the main ingredient is rice which I could offer her, for a bit more variety.

TIA

my ds's have always loved an egg fried rice... really easy and uses up all the leftovers and little bits of meat/veg.

you can do baked rice to go with meat etc

or stir frys with loads of veggies/tofu/chicken etc

to do baked rice:

heat a tablespoon of oliveoil in a baking dish (needs to be deep ish) and heat in the oven

chop a red onion and some garlic and then add to the heated oil

bake the onions and garlic in the oven for around 7 mins or until they are getting golden]

then put cooked rice into the tray and bake (add a drizzle more of olive oil) and stir occasionally

bake at around 200 degrees for 30 mins or so

good one, will add that to my list. Hadn't even thought to offer egg fried rice but she'd wolf that down I bet

risotto?
chilli con carne?

thisisyesterday · 10/01/2009 19:53

chilli, or any kind of savoury mince type thing.

you could put it with anything really. chuck it in with casseroles?

is there a reason for rice specifically?

lucysmam · 10/01/2009 20:02

thisisyesterday, she is going through a bit of a fad & the only thing she isn't wasting at the moment is rice. But the rice has to be the meal if you get me? not as an accompaniment to something like chilli or she turns her nose up at it

If you mix the chilli or whatever into the rice, then it will look like the rice is the main part of the meal!

ahh ok, just wondered if it was allergy related that's all.
perhaps you could just carry on doing risotto type stuff and just gradually increase the amount of other stuff in it?? sneak it up on her lol

you could also maybe do it in a sauce like pasta??
actually, you can get little tiny pasta which looks just like rice, but I can't remember what it's called.

Stinky, that's actually a good idea . . . but not sure I'd get away with spag bol type mince with it!

I'm off to asda this week thisisyesterday so will have a look for tiny pasta, which if it's tiny enough I may be able to get her to eat without realising.

Thanks Marla, will make a note of that one as well to try this coming week

Course you would - just make sure there's loads more rice than meat/sauce or whatever the meal is and she won't notice!

lucysmam · 10/01/2009 21:33

you think so?

I'll give it a go then, makes it a bit more interesting experimenting I guess
