Can anyone suggest a substitute for star anise?

I'm attempting to cook a Nigella Express recipe tomorrow for dinner which uses star anise with venison. I can't find any star anise. Any ideas for what I could use as a substitute?

chinese 5 spice?

fennel seed (tho tbh if you can't get star anise doubt that would be any more commonplace). i think pernod would lose its flavour cooked at heat, 5-spice sounds like a pretty good plan to me failing the fennel.
