If a recipe calls for a green capsicum, does it meen a green pepper or a green chilli?

yes, a fancy word for a pepper!

LiffeySaysNollaigShona · 20/12/2008 17:50

Red Pepper. It's what Australians normally call a pepper I think, because I had an Australian cook book. I'd love to say I know this because I've been to Australia.

they are both capsicum. but they mean a green pepper. Capsicum is the genus of all peppers so technically they are wrong just to put 'capsicum' in a recipe and you have every right to be confused.

Don't put it in, green peppers taste vile (said with confidence despite not knowing what the recipe is).

Kiwis love capsicums, I was forever picking them out of food in restaurants when we went to New Zealand. One restaurant in a small town had bizarre combination of green capsicum and dried apricot in practically every dish.

LiffeySaysNollaigShona · 20/12/2008 18:28

that sounds like a nice combo to me bran! sweetness of apricots with the tartness of green pepper. I may try this and pass it off as my own idea

Well I guess it must be to some people's taste as there were quite a few customers tucking into the chicken, capsicum and apricot pizza. Mind you, there were only about 3 restaurants in the town and we didn't try the others, so perhaps it was just the best choice of a bad bunch. (I had chicken salad as it didn't mention anything about capsicum on the menu, but surprisingly that came garnished with plenty of green capsicum and dried apricot.)

i find if you put the green pepper in late, like the last thing and only let it cook for a couple mins, they don't taste vile like bran says. they still have a crunch too.
