AdvocaatSlubberdegullion · 20/12/2008 12:21

It says in my print out

DO NOT THROW THE LIQUID AWAY

in caps, just like that she is very serious

Does she use it in another recipe - the cherry coke one she says to use the liquid to make a red cabbage.

AdvocaatSlubberdegullion · 20/12/2008 12:29

I don't have How to Eat, just a print out.

I am getting a cold, and therefore slightly off kilter but am quiety loling to myself with a vision of Nigella stirring a vat of black stuff, looking up, winking at the camera and pulling a red cabbage out.

sorry ignore me. Must reduce lemsip max intake.

"and the salty, sweet liquor it leaves behind in the pot after its cooked makes an instant base for the most fabulous black bean soup"

AdvocaatSlubberdegullion · 20/12/2008 12:32

OK, so now I want to make the most fabulous black bean soup.

recipe? recipe?

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 20/12/2008 12:34

Um... bung in 500g of beans (I assume black beans, not baked), adding about 250ml water and the juice and zest of a lime. Cook (how long for it doesn't say - I assume you follow the instructions on the packet of beans) and puree. Add something like green fresh chopped coriander to serve

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 20/12/2008 12:34

And, just so you know, the Ham in Cola recipe appears in the section headed "White Trash Lunch for 6"

AdvocaatSlubberdegullion · 20/12/2008 12:35

lolol You are just MAKING THAT UP aren't you?

OP posts:
sparklyxmasfairy · 20/12/2008 12:36

was wondering the same this morning then had a look in the book and it says to make soup, don't fancy it have no qualms about throwing it away

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 20/12/2008 12:37

I've not made any of it up, honest

AdvocaatSlubberdegullion · 20/12/2008 12:37

Oh no, I hear it is in 'Tasteful and Tradition Christmas Fayre from the Deep South by Rich White Folk with Ancestry'

The immediately preceding recipe is for Pig's Bum.

Which thankfully turns out to be a steamed rhubarb pudding rather than a swine's arse.

NorthernLurkerwithastarontop · 20/12/2008 12:39

If you don't want to make soup will it let you throw it away or will it leap out of the dustbin and throttle you?

AdvocaatSlubberdegullion · 20/12/2008 12:41

really??

I am feeling a bit sway-y so I don't know what is Nigella truth or not.

All I know is that putting baked beans in this liquid would be an error.

AdvocaatSlubberdegullion · 20/12/2008 12:42

NL, as it is in caps I think I should follow her rules, particularly as now I know that I can create the most fabulous black bean soup. Who wants to pour that opportunity down the drain?

OP posts:
DoesntChristmasDragOn · 20/12/2008 12:43

I think you cook some dried black beans in it, using the instructions from the bag of beans but using the liquid + a bit more water rather than just water.

No pig's bottoms required.

AdvocaatSlubberdegullion · 20/12/2008 12:45

okey dokey. Ta Dragon.

I fear I have no black beans in my cupboard so the increadible soup will have to wait.

A friend of mine went to all the trouble of making Nigellas Black Bean soup from the leftover black liquid and she said it was disgusting - she ended up throwing it all away!

geordieminxpie · 20/12/2008 21:09

If I wanted to serve this for boxing day when is the earliest I could make it? Also do I boil it and then roast it and then stash it in fridge or boil it, stash it and then roast on day?

Ta

geordieminxpie · 20/12/2008 21:22

Anyone?

GrimmaTheNome · 20/12/2008 21:25

I'd add it to the compost heap. Sure it must have all sorts of trace elements.

Pendulum · 02/01/2009 22:30

don't make the soup.. it is disgusting.

I read that first on MN and chose not to believe it. spent ages making the soup then had to bin it all.

foxinsocks · 02/01/2009 22:34

It must be a made up sentence

Someone said 'but Nigella, you are so wholesome and love not to waste anything, what shall we do with the black liquid left over?'

and she said 'oh just say black bean soup. It's black like the liquid so sounds feasible. Who on earth would make black bean soup with coke loaded with ham fat'

and voila
