Stupid preserving virgin question - jars

TheOtherMaryPoppinsJingles · 17/12/2008 17:19

Can you use any old jars that you have knocking around, ( washed and sterilised of course), are the openings all the same standard size and where is the best place to buy pretty lids?

TIA

Yes, you can use old jars but all the openings are not the same size annoyingly. If you didn't keep the lids, you can buy lids and jars in Lakeland or you could just cover them in clear sellophane stuff tied with elastic bands and a piece of cloth?

Did you watch Nigella last night, by any chance

You can use old jars with their own lids, and cover them with some nice material tied round with string.

Perhaps

I didn't realise you could reuse the lids, have been throwing them away argh! What about the opoing button bit on the top?

Cellophane - how long would things keep for with that on versus a lid?

(has to be said, you're unlikely to find one here.)

maybe I should proof read the titles too in future not just my post - doubt I have a jar big enough....

Anything fresh with no preservatives in it will have to be kept in the fridge and once you've taken the lid off, will no longer be airtight so it doesn't matter if it's a lid or a cellophane disc (knew that looked wrong in my earlier post - doh!).

If you're making chilli jam - just write on the label that it needs to be eaten within six weeks of opening or something. Can't imagine it'll last long - looked yummy

certainly did :D

Thank you!
