Boiling syrup - soft ball test. Please answer quickly!!!

Ok I have my milk and sugar boiling for coconut ice. If I drop it into cold water it sinks to the bottom in ribbons and I can pull it together into a soft ball. Is this ready or will it drop into a ball straight away when it's ready.

Oh crap. I googled. It would have been ready with the ribbons. Think I overboiled

Never mind I've shoved the coconut in anyway and might be giving away jars of crushed coconut icecream topping for Christmas!

I'm sure it will taste lovely however it looks.

It's very hard! Never mind my step-dad will eat it whatever
