1st bday cake?

i'm useless in the kitchen but want to make my dd's first bday cake.

i know you just make a simple sponge cake (presumably from a packet), but how do you make the icing so it looks pretty (seen some photos on internet) and doesn't taste vile? i'd like to make it so it looks like a little poppy...

Have you thought of plain white and then getting sugar flowers from a cookery shop?

What sort of style do you want? What equipment do you have?

Personally, I think a basic sponge is easy to make from scratch, especially if you have a food processor or kitchen aid type thing.

sugar flowers sounds like a good idea.
