Was in my bag of organic vegetables for casseroling.. was the size of a beetroot, orange skin like a carrot, bright yellow flesh. Have discounted beetroot, swede, turnip and sweet potato. I have peeled and chopped it anyway and added it to the casserole pot, but am just a bit curious

Googling the description has not thrown up any meaningful results

maybe an unusual type of beetroot?
I know they come in different colours.
what does it taste/smell like?

LadySweet · 13/12/2008 14:06

Ooh it smelled a bit like a carrot, I sliced a little bit off and taste wise it was like nothing raw I had tasted before. It was very hard though. I thought all beetroots were the same, perhaps I shouldnt have chopped it...

you can get spherical carrots, but then they would taste of carrots I guess.

kohlrabi?

bronze · 13/12/2008 14:10

You can get orange beetroot

twoluvlysnowmen · 13/12/2008 14:12

could have been some sort of squash. I think I had something similar once, called a "red onion squash" (I think, it was a while ago)

So perhaps it is a beetroot indeed then Do you think I should fish it out the casserole or will it be ok chopped in with the rest of the veg? I had thought you needed to cook beetroot whole in foil in the oven?

I would leave it. I'm sure you can boil beetroot anyway.
I love veg boxes like that. I play guess the veg witht he children then I have to start being inventive with what we're going to eat.

could it be Burpees golden beetroot?

snorkle · 13/12/2008 14:26

see you've already id'dit as beetroot. It should be fine in casserole as long as it cooks for a good long time I think.

LadySweet · 13/12/2008 15:06

Ahh cool, the casserole will be slowly cooking for at least the next 4 hours so should hopefully be done by then If not I'll just have to fish it out and hope no rogue pieces remain
