What is buttermilk?

I was watching gmtv this morning and Tana Ramsey did a peach cobbler

She used buttermilk........... can i use ordinary full fat milk instead do you think?
It looks really yummy.......... minus the nuts cos im allergic, i will prob crush some ginger nuts roughly and put on top instead!

it's sourer than milk. I;m sure you can get it in sainsburys.

I have used cream in place of buttermilk in the past.

If you can't get it, use natural yoghurt.

Buttermilk is in lots of Nigella cake recipes, but she always suggests yog as a substitute

As Chops says, you can buy it in Sainsbury's and also Tesco - you will find it with the fresh cream etc.

If you need it now or you cannot see it in the supermarket, natural yoghurt with some lemon juice in will be a good substitute.

Btw - buttermilk is thicker than ordinary milk.

I add lemon juice to regular milk to get something similar - leave for half an hour or so and it will thicken a little. Great for scones too!
