Smartie biscuits... do I put the smarties on before or after baking ?

I've got a plain biscuit recepie and want to decorate the biscuits with Smarties... I am assuming that I just press the smarties into the biscuits when they come out of the oven? Or do I bake them with the smarties on?

Well you have two choices -

  1. make plain biscuits and put a blob of icing
on top and then stick the smarties on

or which I do

  1. make them with the smarties in

(I do have a recipe somewhere, so if you give me 5 mins, I will go and look)

The biscuits will still be sofy when they come out of the oven so you can press them in straight away.

Surely if you make them with the smarties in they'll melt?

100g/4oz butter, softened, plus extra for greasing
100g/4oz light muscovado sugar
1tbsp golden syrup
150g/6oz self-raising flour
85g/3oz smarties (about 3 tubes)

Heat the oven to 180/fan 160/gas4

Beat the butter and sugar together until light and creamy then beat in the syrup.

Work in half the flour. Stir in the smarties with the remaining flour and work the dough together with your fingers. Divide into 14 balls. Place well apart on the baking sheets. Do not flatten them.

Bake for 12 mins until pale golden at the edges.

You can use them in place of chocolate chips, but if you want them as decoration I'd probably press them on while still soft.

thank you! I will be sticking them on... DS will go into meltdown if the smartie is inside the biscuit, because all the fun is in picking them off! (Then discarding the biscuit for me to find later!!)
