Easy but presentable baked items for NCT Xmas Fun Day (for a Baking virgin!)

I've volunteered to help out at the Kids Fun Day on Sunday and I know they are keen for everyone to bake a cake/biscuits etc for parents/kids. I am crap at this kind of stuff though. I don't have a sweet tooth and just don't make cakes/puddings)

When I do baking with dd it usually comes from a packet, and whilst edible the result is not something I can see others actually paying for.

So I referred to the goddess Nigella and found a recipe for Marshmallow crispy squares, which I'm sure I could manage, but doesn't look that exciting.

Any ideas for something, say that small kids would like, that I could not feck up in the process?

fairy cakes are easy i think. most cookbooks should have a recipe for fairy cakes, but the trick is to make sure you have equal amounts of all the ingredients

then you could decorate them with icing or bits and pieces (from the cake decorating aisle in your supermarkets)

once you've done one batch and are feeling braver you could do lemon flavoured ones or chocolate flavoured ones

whatever you do, dont open the oven door whilst they are cooking until right at the end like i did- makes them g all hard and crackly on top!

Go Antipodean with Lamingtons

Buy a slab of sponge cake, cut into squares. Roll each square in runny chocolate icing or half-set jelly, then in coconut. Leave on rack to dry for a bit. Slice 3/4 of the way through and fill with whipped cream. (or leave them unfilled if cream is a problem for transport/storage)

zq - what a fab recipe - will be trying this out with my kids - not sure there'll be much left after making though!

rock cakes! So easy (google recipe!) takes no time, hard to get wrong & they are not supposed to look pristine which is even better! I think they're gorgeous too!

How about some Christmas gingerbread figures?
You can find easy gingerbread recipes or buy one of those ready to bake gingerbread men cake mixes and then cut out Christmassy shapes. Lakeland and lots of hardware shops sell pastry cutters this time of year with snowmen, Christmas tree, etc. shapes.

You could then decorate the figures using those coloured icing pens. Or else sprinkle some icing sugar over them for a snowy effect.
