Home-made butter

A friend of mine made butter by putting a pot of cream in her KitchenAid for 10 minutes and said it was fantastic. This is something I need to do - if there's a new way of using my KitchenAid then I want to do it! My question is - how long do you think it would keep? My friend said she thinks it would last as long as normal butter but I'm a bit dubious about that - the cream itself only keeps for 3 days once opened so surely it won't be any different just by being whizzed up into butter? Guess I could freeze it in small batches though.

I used to do this with my dad and loved doing it by hand with a little whisk.

Trust me it goes very quickly- within a day in our house :-)

Donb'r forget to add a little salt!

I thought I would make some with salt for us and some without for DS. Then I will feel all Nigella-like and become Wonder Mummy for making his own butter (never mind that he has Cheerios for breakfast!!!)

hehe add garlic to yours and some chopped green herbs if you're going to be really Nigellaish

Also hubby mistakenly bought long-life single cream. Would that be ok or is long-life cream as disgusting as long-life milk?! Can you do it with any cream, do you know? (we have single)

this? any use? it says only double or whipping cream

Tinkjon · 17/11/2008 10:49

Brilliant, thanks Furball1! How stupid of me, of course single cream wouldn't whip up - I should've known that!!

I made this last year with the dc - but we used elbow grease

My mum always made her butter in the food processor with the blade - they kept goats so had their own milk to separate and use.

It keeps longer as you add salt and take away liquid. Its very satisfying
