Does anyone know the cookie in a jar ingredients ?

You know the one where you layer all the ingredients & include the recipe & give as a present? I bought a nice jar in Matalan for £2 & now wish I'd bought more

You can do it with any recipe you like, just take out the wet bits and put them on instruction tag.

e.g. you layer oats, brown sugar, chopped dates, chopped nuts, etc for flapjacks, then say add a butter, honey or whatever.

Cool idea

So for example for the choc chip cookies I just made I could layer oats, flour, sugar and choc chips. Then on the label I would put add an egg and butter?

Any links to nice jars?

Yes, just so long as the recipe you're basing it on has the dry ingredients combined first. iirc this is the way muffins are made - combine dry then combine wet - so you could also do muffins in a jar, could be pretty with brightly coloured fruits or white chocolate chunks or something.

Also nice if you can substitute some brown for white sugar, so you can get two layers of colour for the price of one ingredient, iyswim.

What a lovely idea. DS might like that idea for a couple of his friends too. Got a good smarties cookie recipe that might work, and the smarties will look nice and bright inthe jar. Just need to make sure that the ingredients fir the jar, iyswim.

A nice touch, if you are making a homemade label with instructions, is to tie with it at the neck of the jar a child-size wooden spoon.

So let me get this right.

You get a jar.

You get the dry ingredients of a recipe for biscuits/cakes ect.

Place the dry ingredients loose in the jar in layers then attach a label with the recipe/wet ingredients to add.

Is that right?

Sounds like a fantastic pressie for my nieces.

That's about it charlee, seems too easy doesn't it? I think the jar would have to be packed up pretty full or otherwise you would loose all the pretty layers by the time it was opened on Christmas day?

Yes the jar has to be full to the brim so the layers stay in place. That blog says use a litre jar, but you can get those nice Kilner jars with the springy catches in loads of sizes.

I saw some in a shop today that were described as pink princess cookies - the pink layer appeared to be pink coloured sugar? not sure if it would work or not. I like the idea but am confounded by how you know how much ingredients needed to fill the jar - imagine if you got it all layered up and then couldn't fit in something? or vice versa, had a big gap at the top? am I being a bit stoopid?

Also make sure you put denser stuff at the bottom. Don't put nuts/smarties/dried fruit at the bottom or else when you put the flour/sugar in it will just slip through all the gaps to the bottom.
I will find smarties cookies recipe and post if you would like it.

I am making oaty choc chip cookies later, easy peasy recipe but very yummy. I am going to have a practice with quantities then.
