Instead of cocoa powder?

We have one, not the other

Tis cadbury add milk stuff, not instant iyswim

Yes, it's the same thing.

LostProphet · 28/10/2008 17:28

It has added sugar doesn't it? Which is why cocoa powder tastes more bitter in a drink (or am I talking bollocks?)

Yes that;s a point, so add less sugar. What better excuse to taste the mix before making it.

LostProphet · 28/10/2008 17:33

ooh that is insanely logical "add less sugar"

I have a recipe for cake with drinking chocolate - will dig it out if you want it?

LostProphet · 28/10/2008 17:35

ooh yes please - I am very much one for instructions rather than winging it

It's a lovely easy one - and our default birthday cake because it works so well.
5 oz SR flour
3 oz drinking choc
6 oz caster sugar
3 eggs
6 oz soft marg or butter
3 tbsp boiling water
Put all ingredients in a bowl and mix well (this is the sort of recipe I like!). Line a cake tin 8" gives a deep cake, 9" one of normal depth. Bake at 180 for 1 h (according to the instructions: it takes more like 40 mins in my oven so keep an eye on it)

drinking choc added to butter and icing makes a lovely topping....

LostProphet · 28/10/2008 17:44

Fab!

snigger · 28/10/2008 17:52

Twill be beige, not dark dark gooey chocolatey .....

LostProphet · 28/10/2008 17:54

I have a pot of ready made butter icing from ages ago

Colour don't matter - taste is what counts

OP posts:
boogeek · 28/10/2008 18:23

It is not beige!

LostProphet · 28/10/2008 18:40

I will announce colour in a couple of hours

OP posts:
LostProphet · 28/10/2008 20:00

I have decided I don't give a sh*t what colour it is - it smells incredible

LP, after the plate/fabric drama, frankly, I'd like a slice even if it's green

MadamePlatypus · 28/10/2008 20:03

I don't know, but I think it would be a little bit like using cadbury's dairy milk when the recipe calls for 70% cocoa dark chocolate - not impossible, but not the same ingredient.

LostProphet · 28/10/2008 20:09

It'll be fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine

Looks good

methinks DH put a bag of plain flour in the self raising tub though... I had about 2oz from a bag, and the rest from the tub - it isn't a risen as I would have expected!

Our default birthday cake is also made with drinking chocolate - a whopping 8oz. It's from Claire Macdonald, Seasonal Cooking, and can be altered to make it more or less sticky (in fact my default is the brown sugar, plain flour version and it's great).

6 oz (175g) butter
6 oz (175g) caster sugar, or dark brown/muscovado for a stickier cake
4 large eggs
8 oz (225g) drinking chocolate powder
3 oz (75g) SR flour, or plain for a stickier cake
few drops of vanilla essence

Cream butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add eggs one by one, beating well. Sieve flour and drinking chocolate together and add to mixture. Add vanilla essence. The mixture will be fairly runny. Grease and flour two 8-9 in. sandwich tins (I do it in just one and it's fine). Bake at 350F or 180C for about 30 minutes.

vesela · 28/10/2008 21:39

or you can use more flour and less drinking chocolate, although I don't think I ever have

LostProphet · 28/10/2008 22:06

Did the recipe from earlier - it was lovely and def def BROWN
