I just made @boogeek 's recipe as fairy cakes. Baked for 12 minutes at 170C and they came out perfect. Thankyou!

That recipe is amazing! My chocolate cakes never rise properly and end up a gooey mush but this is brilliant! My whole house smells of delicious chocolate now, even though I baked last night.

The cream cheese frosting:

125g unsalted butter, softened
250g cream cheese
1 teaspoon vanilla
4 cups icing sugar, sifted

Beat butter, cheese, vanilla till light and fluffy (3 mins. approx.)
Gradually add icing sugar, keep mixing till incorporated.
Refrigerate for 1 hour.

For the cake recipe given above, (i.e. if you're just doing a single layer cake), you may want to half the icing recipe.

I've been further reducing the icing sugar quantity and adding a bit of drinking chocolate to make it chocolate cream cheese icing. Grin

I have made this cake (with Haplessmale's suggestion incorporated) about a dozen times over the last couple of months, it's gone as soon as it's cooled. Absolutely fabulous and so far idiot-proof Grin. Made a double layered version with cream-cheese icing and WOW - thank you all!

btw change 6 oz caster sugar to 4oz seems to work a treat :)

all i can say is WOW i am probably the worst cook in the planet when it comes to baking desserts but that chocolate cake was yummy :)
made it with the kids and was nicely surprised :)
It's a lovely easy one - and our default birthday cake because it works so well.
5 oz SR flour
3 oz drinking choc
6 oz caster sugar
3 eggs
6 oz soft marg or butter
3 tbsp boiling water
Put all ingredients in a bowl and mix well (this is the sort of recipe I like!). Line a cake tin 8" gives a deep cake, 9" one of normal depth. Bake at 180 for 1 h (according to the instructions: it takes more like 40 mins in my oven so keep an eye on it)
so ty whoever posted it because we are buzzing

or you can use more flour and less drinking chocolate, although I don't think I ever have

Our default birthday cake is also made with drinking chocolate - a whopping 8oz. It's from Claire Macdonald, Seasonal Cooking, and can be altered to make it more or less sticky (in fact my default is the brown sugar, plain flour version and it's great).

6 oz (175g) butter
6 oz (175g) caster sugar, or dark brown/muscovado for a stickier cake
4 large eggs
8 oz (225g) drinking chocolate powder
3 oz (75g) SR flour, or plain for a stickier cake
few drops of vanilla essence

Cream butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add eggs one by one, beating well. Sieve flour and drinking chocolate together and add to mixture. Add vanilla essence. The mixture will be fairly runny. Grease and flour two 8-9 in. sandwich tins (I do it in just one and it's fine). Bake at 350F or 180C for about 30 minutes.

Looks good

methinks DH put a bag of plain flour in the self raising tub though... I had about 2oz from a bag, and the rest from the tub - it isn't a risen as I would have expected!

I don't know, but I think it would be a little bit like using cadbury's dairy milk when the recipe calls for 70% cocoa dark chocolate - not impossible, but not the same ingredient.

LP, after the plate/fabric drama, frankly, I'd like a slice even if it's green
