Bread Pudding. Do I really have to soak the bread for a whole hour????

I want to make it so DH can take some to work but soaking it for an hour will make it too late.

Can I cut the time down?

I just mash it a bit and by the time I've measured out the other ingredients, it's fine (Delia recipe).

My first attempt at bread pudding is in the oven.

Why is it so hard to squeeze the water out without it squelching through your fingers and back in the water....??
What am I doing wrong?

what type of bread did you use and was it stale or fresh?

A stale white bloomer.

It wasn't rock hard stale but way beyond nice fluffy sandwich stage
