Eat or bin?

I bought some chicken breasts on Sunday and their use by date is today. I have just opened the pack and as per usual with me the meat smells off but unusually it smells a bit like fish. Having googled it says keep in the fridge for up to 2 days and I clearly have done that for longer as I was unaware of this recommendation. I definitely won't give it to the kids now but I would rather not throw it away if it is okay for us. I was planning on making chicken korma curry for us.

Bin it. Chicken shouldn't smell of anything iykwim.

ilovemydog · 18/10/2008 14:13

If it smells funky, bin it...

Cheeseandseveredfingersarnie · 18/10/2008 14:14

chuck and become veggie

shinyshoes · 18/10/2008 14:17

wash it then smell it again.

If its been sitting in a packet in it's juices for a few days it will smell.

The use by is today so it shouldn't be off.

wheniwasyoung · 18/10/2008 14:22

I will try washing and let you know.

Thank you!

had you opened the pack between sunday and today? If so, then i would leave it, but it should be okay if the use by date is today. Having said that, if it was me and it smelled odd, I would bin it too.

wheniwasyoung · 18/10/2008 14:27

I only opened it just now.

mmm.... lamb pasander..... can we come

wheniwasyoung · 18/10/2008 14:30

Of course, but I still need to know if the chicken is definitely for the bin and how long the lamb will take to defrost??!!

if you only just opened it and the date is today, i would take it back. especially the price of chicken breasts!
Just a thought, but is your fridge working properly? Have you checked the temperature in there, it's just that in your first post you said "as per usualy with me the meat smells off" just a thought.

RedOnHerBeheadedHead · 18/10/2008 14:33

lamb steaks....
personally, i would put them in a large bowl of cold water if you want them to defrost quickly - just make sure there are no ice crystals before you cook it.

wheniwasyoung · 18/10/2008 14:34

I always think meat sells off and often that milk tastes off so I think it is just me rather than my fridge.

OP posts:
RedOnHerBeheadedHead · 18/10/2008 14:36

could you get a second opinion on the chicken smell then?

wheniwasyoung · 18/10/2008 14:44

Im off to take it back. DH thought no too.
