6 for dinner tonight, either Sainsbos or I messed up and I don't have the parsnips that I wanted. What will I do instead?

I am not going out to get parsnips as I have a thousand other things to do today and because I got my shopping delivered last night, there are lots of other things available.

I was going to do sausages (beef) with a potato/parsnip mash with a couple of chopped sprouts through it.

But no parsnips, so was going to do something with red cabbage and sausages instead. But all the recipes seem to be for red cabbage with apple and spices and pork sausages.

Will it taste odd if I use beef sausages instead?

Got any bacon? Do the red cabbage with onion and bacon...tis gorgeous. Or do the beef sausages but add spring onion and a bit of cheese to the mash and sprouts. Hope you have the sprouts on to boil already...lol!

No bacon or anything pork at all actually.

Onion is a good plan though, thanks

just do what you were going to do, but instead of potato and parsnip mash, do mustard mash. Just add dijon mustard (if you have it). Alternatively Horseradish in the mash is also very good and ymmu with beef sausages

mawbroon · 14/10/2008 16:38

Oh shit. I don't effing believe it!!

DH put some of the shopping away, so I didn't see every item that arrived! Now, I go to the cupboard to get the tatties and there are no bloody tatties either!

you got any rice?

sausages with onion gravy, lots of veg and rice

mawbroon · 14/10/2008 16:41

It's gonna be sausages, beans and chips at this rate!!

Have checked my confirmation email and it looks like it was me that forgot the parsnips and tatties.

Useless or what?

mawbroon · 14/10/2008 16:42

Yup, think it will have to be rice because my mum can't eat pasta.

Think the red cabbage/onion concoction would taste ok with the rice?

childrenofthecornsilk · 14/10/2008 16:42

takeaway?

mawbroon · 14/10/2008 16:44

LOL, cornsilk.

There's 100 quids worth of shopping in the house! I am sure I can rustle something up..........

could you do toad in the hole? have you got batter ingredients?

mawbroon · 14/10/2008 16:46

I do bundle. What for carbs though? Bit odd with rice don't you think?

Also, was planning apple/blueberry sponge for pudding, so a bit similar.

Maybe could change the pudding though

bah - bundle beat me to it, was just thinking toad in the hole with red cabbage and onion gravy [yum]

bundle · 14/10/2008 16:47

nige's toad

(ignore the bacon bits, he's just getting poncey)

surely the batter is carby enough?

snooks · 14/10/2008 16:47

carbs are in the flour/egg batter

snooks · 14/10/2008 16:48

sorry bundle, i'm like your shadow. Will bow out

bundle · 14/10/2008 16:48

i think key with red cabbage is a bit sweet, a bit sour

bundle · 14/10/2008 16:48

snooks

mawbroon · 14/10/2008 16:48

I normally do toad in the hole with some other carbs though.

I suppose I could serve some bread and butter with it for those who wanted

OP posts:
mawbroon · 14/10/2008 16:52

Ok, toad in the hole, red cabbage with onion and bread/butter on the side.

I could maybe make apple fool for pudding. Don't have any cream or custard, but could whizz up the apples (they are already stewed) with some vanilla ice cream and yogurt....

what time can we come round?[lip-licking emoticon]

mawbroon · 14/10/2008 16:59

LOL, you think it sounds ok then?

9pm will be just great to help with the dishes thanks

My parents are very hard to cater for. They are very traditional in their tastes and have a couple of allergies to throw into the mix as well. Nothing spicy, nothing with garlic, nothing with pasta, nothing with any taste, nothing exciting!!

They sound like my parents - my dad was trying lasagne last night for the first time in his life (he's 67). My mum had a gammon steak in as a back-up - and they wonder where ds1 gets his picky eating from

Food sounds delish - they will love it. Enjoy.

mawbroon · 14/10/2008 17:57

LOL at gammon steak. Did it have a ring of tinned pineapple on it by any chance?

My Dad is very suspicious of things he doesn't know. One time, my mum made a nice tomato and basil salad and he asked her (quite seriously) "what is the green stuff? Is it poisonous?"

Thanks for all your help everyone.

The cabbage/onions are simmering away, the sausages are partially grilled to help reduce the fat content of the toad in the hole, the apple fool is made, so it is all go.

OP posts:
snooks · 14/10/2008 18:00

no tinned pineapple sadly, my dad wouldn't have anything sweet on the same plate as something savoury - that's just not normal

mawbroon · 14/10/2008 18:22

Oh crikey, that is extreme!

Makes my dad sound adventurous, he would definitely have tinned pineapple with it!
