I have got a chicken, that's it (so far!)

what do I do? was thinking maybe potatoes, broccoli, swede and carrots.

Any advice greatly appreciated, including timings, gravy and yorkies, and any tips on making it that bit scrummier...

oooo id go really easy - get a cooked chicken already cooked and hot at tesco thus saving you undercooking it burning it or your house reeking of cooked chicken, buy those lovely steamed potatoes with hersbs on and the steam vegies for the microwave - also steamed swede - stab and place in microwave whilst disecting aforementioned chicken. The whole job takes 7-8 mins with ahhh bisto gravy and tasted delish - of course i would always make homemade yorkies so then they are so impressed with homemade yorkies knowone realised everything else was a chuck together job . I am gutted tesco isnt open on a xmas day so i can get a cooked chicken

'your house reeking of cooked chicken'

this is a bad thing?????

harpomarx · 01/10/2008 19:22

I would wear 'reeking of cooked chicken' perfume if they made it

Nappyzoneneedssleep · 01/10/2008 19:33

no it lingers for days and makes me wretch and the cost of energy it must cost a bomb to cook!

harpomarx · 01/10/2008 19:34

I'm guessing you don't cook fish or cabbage then, Nappyzone...

Tutter · 01/10/2008 19:35

make it easy on yourself - roast all the veg, together

Nappyzoneneedssleep · 01/10/2008 19:38

i love fish - i love tuna steaks- i love cabbage - i cook all these - fish is quick also which helps - chicken takes hrs so the smell really spreads. I am a domestic goddess honestly!

Overmydeadbody · 01/10/2008 19:42

chicken doesn't take hours! Maybw one hour, max, and it's energy efficient if you use the oven to cook everything at the same time.

I do love Uncle Ben's long grain rice with roast chicken, roast onions and gravy , especially if you cook the rice in the bottom of the roasting tin with the chicken and it absorbs all the chicken juices. One-Pot cooking at it's finest.

I liek my chicken well done and slow cooked liek on a rottisere (sp) at tescos for hrs

Iworryalot · 01/10/2008 20:39

Thanks everyone!

Right I have a chicken that is 1.3kg, so I googled that to 2.9 pounds so how long will I be cooking that for?

I also now have a steamer so which veg are going in that?

I bought the yorkies that are frozen but just yorkie mix in trays so semi-cooking them lol

oh and nappyzone - I thoroughly understand. At MILs house, when she cooked a roast you went home and could smell it in your clothes and hair for ours. Odd cos I didn't like it (even thoguh I like roasts) and exH didn't ever notice.
