apple crumble - please help

I'm making crumble but have completely forgotten whether you neeed to cook the apple before, or whether you can just chop up,layer in the dish and sprinkle with sugar and then add topping - help please !!

When I do it, I don't cook the apple - just do the second thing and put it all in together.

I do, because then you don't have to slice it so thin, and it cooks quicker (30 mins for large crumble). If you don't, make sure to slice it thinly and cook well.

thanks !! I was having a moment of doubt - shows how long it is since I made one - think I might cook it first and test for sweetness
