Having had Shepherds pie for dinner, it got me thinking about what others put in theirs, a friend puts mushrooms in hers [yuck] others add ketchup, tinned tomatoes, vegetables.

What do you put in yours

Depends on what's in the pantry/fridge:

peas
tinned tomatoes
diced carrot
onion
squirt of ketchup
spoonful of gravy granules
slosh of red wine
dried herbs

carrot, onion, bacon, mince, tomato puree, stock, lea and perrins, sometimes cumin, branston pickle (if I have it), sometimes raisins. In fact, anything to hand until the flavour's right... Like it to be a bit sweet and a bit spicy!

I'm with you on mushrooms, love 'em but there's no place for them in my shepherd's pie!

Like Boys

(but minus gravy granules and ketchup and a stock cube instead)
sometimes a wee dash of hendersons

harpomarx · 26/09/2008 18:45

actually, the best shepherds pie I ever made was when I used braising steak and chopped it up with a knife (thought I had mince in the freezer but didn't). It was gooorgeous.

themildmannneredjanitor · 26/09/2008 18:48

never really make shepherds pie as ds1 dislikes the mince/potato combo

biscuitsmustbedunkedintea · 26/09/2008 21:37

Mince, baked beans, stock, beer, tomato sauce and Lea & Perrins

AMumInScotland · 26/09/2008 21:47

Mince, carrots, stock, tomato puree, Lea&Perrins, mustard powder

MrsCurly · 26/09/2008 21:50

Baked beans????!!

mince, onion, garlic, carrots, tomato puree, Lea & Perrins, leeks in with the mashed potatoes, and cheese on top

norksinmywaistband · 26/09/2008 22:06

MInce, onion, mushrooms, tom puree, baked beans, lea and perrins, some home made veg puree, topped with potato and swede mash and cheese.

As you can see the kids love it and I see it as an excuse to push as many veg as possible

biscuitsmustbedunkedintea · 26/09/2008 22:08

Oh thank you norks for putting Baked beans in yours too!

It's a veg right? DH is fussy...

norksinmywaistband · 26/09/2008 22:11

Yes its a veg, and I think it makes it go further and makes the sauce really yummy.
The others don't know what they are missing

notsoteenagemum · 26/09/2008 22:30

Mince, onion, carrots, marmite, bovril, tomato puree, black pepper.

No way to mushrooms anything in the mash, cheese or baked beans.

Always have to serve with cabbage, broccoli, peas and extra gravy. mmmm
