They can't be eaten raw

I was hoping to 'sprout' them with DD

Am I right? will they make beansprouts?

Or have I wasted my money

Did you buy them in the supermarket or in a garden centre? I have some in the cupboard to cook and others to sprout.

WilfSell · 22/09/2008 21:05

mung beans DO make beansprouts!

chuck some kitchen towel on a plate, pour water over, sprinkle on mung beans, voila coupla days later, beansprouts!

WilfSell · 22/09/2008 21:06

whaddaya mean they can't be eaten raw...

Donk · 22/09/2008 21:07

YEs you can make bean sprouts.
They CAN be eaten raw when sprouted (or cooked after sprouting).
By default ALL pulses now tell you not to eat them raw, and to boil for 10 minutes minimum.
AFAIK its only kidney beans that are poisonous raw!
Soak overnight
Put in sprouter - and wash morning and evening
Keep in the dark if you want white sprouts. Achieveing fat chinese type sprouts is difficult, but they still taste nice.
If they are left out in the light you will get green sprouts.
These taste nice too.

KatyMac · 22/09/2008 21:07

Oh...supermarket - have I brought the wrong ones?

I thought it was more complicated than that Wilfself

Supermarkets are overcautious on the subject of raw pulses - in case they get sued I expect!
My mung beans for sprouting came from a supermarket...

ScottishMummy · 22/09/2008 21:09

takes 4-5 days to sprout, keep them well watered, change water every 8-12hr for 4-5Days
How Long to Grow

If you just want little sweet mungs
(1/4 - 1/2 inch roots):Rinse and Drain every 8-12 hours for 2 - 3 days.

If you just want to grow big mungs
(1 - 3 inch roots):Rinse and Drain every 8-12 hoursfor 4 - 5 days.

Mung · 22/09/2008 21:09

I may be totally wrong, but I dont sprout my dried ones from the supermarket. If you can sprout those then its probably loads cheaper to do it that way.

It is pretty simple to sprout them though. I soak mine for a few hours and then sprout them in a huge jar I have. I rinse them twice a day.

Thanks I will let you know if supermarket beans can be sprouted

There seems to be differing methods of production

I accidentally sprouted my chickpeas the other day. weird

Mung · 25/09/2008 22:03

Last thing you need when you feel ill. So, you had to entertain her all day then? Poor thing. I hope noone else gets it tonight and you manage to sleep off your ailments.

KatyMac · 25/09/2008 22:06

I was ready to strangle her by 9.03
