I'm looking for cookie recipes and lots seem to say half a cup or a cup of whatever rather than a nice sensible quantity. how much do they mean? I only have mugs!

you can buy measuring cups at anywhere they sell kitchen equipment. They are a specific measure.

As long as you use the same mug it usually works if you measure all the ingredients in cups, especially for things like biscuits.
