Mine was always the same:

Cornedbeef or ham sandwich on white bread
Packet of 5p crisps
Apple/orange
Milky Way or a Mars Bar
One of those cheapy juice cartons where you stick the straw through the film on top of the cup.

Yes, those drinks in a yoghurt pot type container, with a straw. In summer our local newsagent froze them and charged 5p more, I loved them. My mum must have hated the blue/ green/red stained clothes, haha.

DrNortherner · 12/09/2008 18:38

OOh a quarter of choc lick - that was delicious!! We used to go mad for that.

I think it was just crunched up/powdery chocolate bits wasn't it?

Oh yes I remember having the juice frozen too in summer, it was a real treat!

At secondary school we had crisps from teh shop on the way, then lunch, then sweets on the way home.

At secondary I always had a ploughmans lunch as all the hot food smelt vile. We also had a 'fun' game of dropping bits of chewed food into the big water jugs and hoping no one noticed. Eurgh.

By A Levels my lunch money went on half a pack of marlboro lights (shared with best friend) , a pack of minstrels and a can of coke.

Actually at my sisters secondary school they now have a card that is topped up by parents and can only be used in the school canteen, I wonder how many young smokers such a scheme will stop?

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 12/09/2008 18:43

Haha choc lick, I remember, the best bits had hundreds and thousands in it.

I used to have school dinnners but if we ever had a packed lunch for an outing it was something like meat paste sarnies or maybe marmite, with some squash in one of those tupperware drinks things, and maybe an apple. Sometimes a packet of crisps, not often. Later on at secondary school it was regular school dinners but by the 5th form I had enough of those and me and my mates used escape down to the local shops - twas against the rules but we never got caught - we would buy a bowl of 10p soup in the caff if it was cold, and if it was hot we would go to the fruit shop and buy oranges. The rest of our school dinner money we would pocket and spend on gin and orange at the pub!!

On the subject of packed lunches, they used to be much simpler affairs - my mum used to buy loads of those shippams sandwich paste things for my dad's sarnies to take to work, also corned beef, and some bizarre tinned meat product called Pek.

My Nan once told my Grandad he couldn't have tinned ham in his work sandwiches as that was for "best"!

I normally went home but on rare occasions

COrnish wafer ice cream tub 4l one iirc.

Aomw sort of square flask with diluting juice in or a sodastream bottle with pop in.

Sandwiches in cling film peanut butter, chopped pork or jam.

An apple. A smartie egg. A packet of chewits. Never had a school dinner till I was 16.

BigHotMama · 12/09/2008 19:53

Jeez
Frightening the crap we weaned this generation in!

HensMum · 14/09/2008 15:36

Was talking to DP about this last night after we saw a Pepperami ad on TV. When he got Pepperamis for his lunch, his mum would also put a Clorette mint in for afterwards!

lettuce and cucumber sandwiches (I asked for them)
Chocolate biscuit and a packet of crisps
Orange squash or Saft (mixed fruit juice) in a tupperware cup with lid on.

compo · 14/09/2008 15:44

sandwiches always on wholemeal - various fillings like mashed banana, scrambled egg and cress, salad sandwich (just lettuce and tomato), peanut butter and cucumber
Think occasionally had a trio but mostly it was fruit and a carton of apple juice
If I was lucky a cold sausage was put in as well
our headmistress at primary school used to come into the room where us packed lunchers were eating massive cream cakes to try and get us all to have school dinners

Lapin I had to have school dinners when I went to school in England and I used to beg my mum to let me have packed lunch because my best friend did (and school dinners were rank on the whole). But then we moved to Sweden for three years and packed lunch was the only option at the school I went to...made me very happy indeed.

Had school dinners at primary mostly.

High school i would go up the village and have beef flavour hula hoops/can of coke/mars bar along with the 10 Benson&Hedges that i'd spent my dinner money on.

Every day too!!

PictureThis · 14/09/2008 15:55

I remember that. I'm sure that's why I don't like leaving food on my plate now.

Troutpout · 14/09/2008 15:59

had free school meals untill secondary
Then had ham and green pepper sandwiches or chicken roll or haslet or something like that
a penguin and a packet of crisps. Bottle of squash to drink

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 14/09/2008 16:00

ewww! i hated my mums packed lunches and could never work out why my sarnies were tiny. i thought we must buy special tiny bread from somewhere. it turned my mum was that hungry when she was making them that she would cut the middle out of our cheese sarnies and eat them herself.

as well as tiny cheese sarnies we had asda farmstores crisps, an asda puffin bar a farmstores yoghurt and a bruised apple.

i lived p/t with my nan though and her lunch boxes made up for it. i would have a fresh butchers ham, cheese and salad sandwhich, on proper sized bread , walkers crisps, a mars or snickers bar, muller corner a pear and a banana and a small bottle of coke. she also gave me £3.00 to buy sausage rolls, pizza more coke and more chocolate from the canteen on break times. amazingly i was a skinny child
