what is the best way to toast a sandwich? Broil in oven, butter outside of bread and fry (as a grilled cheese), or some other way?

Returning to thread at Squiffy's request.

Cheese & egg toastie - I think you need the much-maligned sandwich toaster for this, it would probably be messy otherwise. Put your slice of bread in the toast, butter side down as usual. Add grated cheese. Whisk up egg as for scrambled egg, pour gently over cheese - the cheese will 'soak' it up to some extent. Slam on top piece of bread, shut toaster, cook.

It's awkward because 3/4 of an egg does two toasties, try to cram a whole egg in and semi-cooked cheese/egg mixture will ooze out of the sides.

Cheese with yummy chutney - I like caramelised red onion chutney myself

I had a craving for cheese on toast with thinly sliced beef tomatoes and streaky bacon the other day, too . I love being pregnant just so that I can give in to those cravings.
