What can I substitute for buttermilk?

I can't find any buttermilk in the local shops and need it for a chocolate cake recipe this afternoon. Can I use something else in its place and will it be as good?

Just found this really quite useful site - buttermilk near the top.

For 200ml buttermilk, you can substitute 75ml plain yoghurt and 125ml semi-skimmed milk

thanks

Habbibu what a useful site.

SP, recipe calls for 75ml of buttermilk so I'll use 25ml yog and 50ml ss milk

Don't know if you have ever used buttermilk before, loucee, but it is just like a thinnish yoghurt.

I remember my mum used to save up sour milk for using in recipes.
