its like marmite - you either love it or hate it!

As long as I dont think too much about what is in it, I love it and it tastes delicious.

Served with mashed turnips and a wee dram of whiskey!

bigknickersbigknockers · 05/08/2008 16:39

I love haggis!! Have it with mashed pots and mashed turnip. Mmmmmm

nickytwotimes · 05/08/2008 16:42

entrails...

I'm a veggie Scot and love Mcsweens (sp?) Vegetarian haggis.

Don't forget your mashed 'potatoes' either, aka tatties. And it's not 'turnip', it's bashed neeps, lassie, lol!

GentleOtter · 05/08/2008 16:43

Haggis ingredients

bigknickersbigknockers · 05/08/2008 16:43

I susspect that entrails are unpleasant, what exactly are they?

OP posts:
Collision · 05/08/2008 16:44

bits and pieces of animal

mushed up heart, liver and lung of a lamb minced with onion and oatmeal and boiled in a sheep's stomach for hours.....

.....apart from that YUMYUM!!

lou031205 · 05/08/2008 16:45

I love haggis!!! It has got a lovely warmth from the spices, and the barley in it makes the texture scrummy. To be honest, if you aren't precious about offal, you will love it. If you are, either get over it before you try haggis, or don't eat it

oatmeal not barley!!

geordieminx · 05/08/2008 16:46

Proper haggis tastes like good sausage...cheap haggis... Bleurgh...

peggotty · 05/08/2008 16:50

I used to be veggie, but I love haggis. Am really fussy about meat as well. I just try not to think what's in it when I eat it. Best ones are spicy and peppery

Klaw · 05/08/2008 16:59

Ah it's fab! Hall's haggis in the Supermarket is perfectly delicious! And you must have it with neeps and tatties (turnip/suede and potatoes, both mashed) and I must have lots of pepper on my neeps and tatties....

both ds and dd love it too

elmoandella · 05/08/2008 17:06

oooooooooooooh yummmmmmmmmmm [slevering emoticon]

i like haggis.

a) in toast with brown sauce.

b) on a baked potato.

c) ontop of either steak or chicken breast with a creamy liquer sauce. and big chunky chips!!

ScummyMummy · 05/08/2008 17:07

good haggis is delicious, imo.

elmoandella · 05/08/2008 17:08

halls do it in nice little slices too. they whole haggis's can be far too much.

Whizzz · 05/08/2008 17:09

Costco do a lovely haggis...yum

AMumInScotland · 05/08/2008 17:13

Even if you don't normally like offal (like me) haggis is fine, because everything is minced up and mixed with with oatmeal, so it doesn't have that "offal" texture. It can be quite peppery, and quite rich, so you won't need a huge portion.

Mashed potatoes and mashed swede are the normal accompaniments, but not usually really creamed but more roughly mashed IYSWIM.

My DH is a great convert, and specially loves it with a cream & whisky sauce.

falcon · 05/08/2008 17:13

It's delicious and you have it with mashed turnips and potatoes.

bigknickersbigknockers · 05/08/2008 17:18

DH is bullying me trying to persuade me to try it, I dont want it to be honest but I am always telling the children to try different foods.

bigpants be brave.

bigknickersbigknockers · 05/08/2008 17:23

I am on the verge of a major tantrum if he brings up the subject of haggis again, he wont even eat liver or kidney. < I DONT WANT TO EAT IT> [foot stamping emoticon]

OP posts:
MaryAnnSingleton · 05/08/2008 17:25

don't like it, dh does..neeps and tatties followed by a dollop of that Scottish oat pudding with whisky (which is yum)

GentleOtter · 05/08/2008 17:26

At least give it a try! 5 million Scots don't give a fig what is in haggis and it IS our national dish you know.
Anyway, it is good for you.

bigknickersbigknockers · 05/08/2008 17:48

I will give it a go, I dont want to be rude so shall have to try it but if its bad I wont be eating it. I can miss out on the skin though cant I?
