Are chestnuts nuts?

Stupid question I know. But I am making lentil & chestnut soup (using up leftover tins from Xmas) and ant to know if I can give it to my 9 month old?

According to Delia yes they can cause allergies as they are a nut. they are also for some reason related to latex allergies Very wierd. I didnt risk it with my lo last autumn when we went picking tho she did want one.
