If I am going to buy good vanilla extract, which is the best type? From Madagascar? Mexico? Elsewhere? Does it even make a difference?

Madagascar is supposed to be the best.

No idea if provenance makes a difference. I buy one from Sainsbury, from their Special Selection. Made by Nielsen-Massey, it doesn't say where it comes from, but it's lovely. (not cheap though)

yes, don't touch essence !!

But i got some really, really fab ones directly from the collective in the Seychelles. they are currently scenting sugar in a big jar downstairs. totally yummy.

Yum. I love vanilla. Will get the Madagascan one then and perhaps more beans too. Thanks

Nielsen-Massey is Dutch - but I can never find it in the shops here in Holland, funnily enough

Otherwise: what MaryAnn said!

Madagascar good. Réunion even better if you can find it...
