nothing too fancy but all recipes welcome.

i know the basics - more wholewheat and oily fish, less animal fats , more exersise.

problem is if it were just for me - no problem - i can eat wholegrain anything til the cows come home, but dh and bil are not bit pasta fans. - so lateral thinking required - i dont mind cooking a seperate bit of pasta for me whilst they have chips or something - but need recipe ideas.

i have some frozen chicken breasts and would love a curry idea. i am not a fan of creamy curries anyway

so any ANY ideas welcome. I hate cooking with a passion - i can't tell you.

i am cooking for 10 people and the occasional school friend/gf/bf and my purse has limits as we are moving house soon.

the quicker
the simpler
the cheaper
the better

thank you

bollocks starch is not bad - carbohydrates should form the backbone of a healthy diet - I hate this all carbs sare poison rubbish.

Where possible choose carbs that aren't too refined - potatoes, pasta (wholewheat better but nothing wrong with plain), bread (better wholegrain/seeded).

Just imagine that the rule of thimb is the less its been dicked around with the better it is for you (probably)

OverMyDeadBody · 07/07/2008 13:46

If you are just wanitng to get healthier, I would increase exercise rather than worrying too much about what you eat, although increasing fruit and veg and cutting back on high fat foods at the same time will alos help.

noddyholder · 07/07/2008 13:47

custy those little flora drinks are brilliant for cholesterol i was involved in a hospital trial for them and every persons went down some a fair bit

Kewcumber · 07/07/2008 13:48

be careful with rice though - choose either brown or basmati - and eat the skins if you;re having baked.

Have you tried cottage cheese rather than other fats on jackets?

OverMyDeadBody · 07/07/2008 13:48

yes have the low cholesterol marg on it! I'd go for butter personally.

Have you been medically advised to lower your cholesterol levels?

OverMyDeadBody · 07/07/2008 13:49

Why be careful with rice Kew? Brown rice may have more bran in it, but that doesn't make white rice evil or anything.

Tortington · 07/07/2008 13:54

not medically advised...yet

my BP is way too high.

things need to change.

what flora drinks noddy? what am i looking for? they sound great.

the low cholesterol marg it is then!

and i have to say this

COTTAGE CHEESE IS WRONG

just wrong

no it doesnt OMDB - I said careful not avoid - white rice (except) basmati has a high glycaemic index, so if you can eat brown or basmati its better for your insulin levels.

I eat whathever I'm given out but stick to basmati at home.

Kewcumber · 07/07/2008 13:57

I love cottgae cheese especially with fruit yum.

canofworms · 07/07/2008 14:00

If Bp is high then you need to look at your salt intake - don't cook with it and don't add any at the table.

Also minimum of 5 portions of fruit/ veg per day

Cut down on saturated fat - ie butter and fat on meats but things like olive oil and sunflower oil ok

Flora drinks and spreads are a marketing ploy - not been fully researched to actually work. Also the plant stenols only are absorbed into our bodies by adding them to fat so these drinks/spreads/yogurts etc need to be higher in fat anyway to work - bit of a waste of money imo

To reduce cholesterol you should have 2 portions of oily fish per week ie salmon/sardines/mackerel/fresh tuna (tinned tuna doesn't count)

Not read all posts so hope I'm not repeating what's been said!

Tortington · 07/07/2008 14:04

thankst canof worms - i have googled so know the basics, its how to interpret them into a life with 10 people without going broke!

OP posts:
OverMyDeadBody · 07/07/2008 14:06

yes I agree all those drinks and spreads are nothing but a marketing ploy. As I already said, it is impossible to affect the levels of cholesterol in our body by eating more or less food with high cholesterol levels.

OverMyDeadBody · 07/07/2008 14:10

um, canofworms, people need salt in their diets. And research has found that reducing dietary salt intake has only a negligable effect on PB levels, on on effect at all.

It is another great myth, just like the cholesterol myth.

Tortington · 07/07/2008 14:12

OMBD - are you saying it doesn't matter what i eat?

am confused (it's not hard)

OP posts:
Kewcumber · 07/07/2008 14:13

hasn't eating oats been proven to have a beneficial effect on cholesterol levels?

Kewcumber · 07/07/2008 14:15

no I think OMDB is saying that is a generally healthy diet minimising saturated fats that improves cholesterol. High cholestrol levels are created by our liverws form saturated fats so thats what you need to reduce. How much cholesterol an wegg has or a prawn has isn;t relevant because the cholesterol in them doesn't convert to cholestrol in our bodies.

canofworms · 07/07/2008 14:16

OMDB - I have diagnosde high cholesterol and high blood pressure and with a lot of effort I can actually get the levels back down to normal by changing my diet so I know it works!

I'm well aware people need salt but it is such a minimal amount that we would get that anyway in a balanced diet without adding it

I'd be interested in the research you are "quoting" as I use this advice every day in my job and like to know all angles

Tortington · 07/07/2008 14:16

oh right, so its not like reading the back of packet... its more a lifestyle choice in general

OP posts:
Kewcumber · 07/07/2008 14:18

readin the back of the packets can be helpful if you are generally clueless about whats in foods. But if you understand that most red meat (with the exception of venison) is generally high in unsaturated fats as are cheese, butter, cream, doughnuts etc. Then general choices basedon what you know is healthy is likely to be fine.

Tortington · 07/07/2008 14:22

thanks.
apart from crispy bacon and skinny sausages, am not reeeeeeeeeally a red meat person. so no problemo!

OP posts:
OverMyDeadBody · 07/07/2008 14:25

yes it's a lifestyle choice custy, lots of general changes rather than buying into gimcky foods.

Give me a minute canofworms and I'll get that info for you.

canofworms · 07/07/2008 14:27

Cheers!

noddyholder · 07/07/2008 15:34

There are little bottles of yoghurt like drinks in the chill cabinets in sainsburys etc and they lower cholesterol They are a bit expensive but quite often on bogof so look out.they take about 5 weeks to work adn they do blood pressure ones too but i didn't try those so not sure.A mediterannean diet brigs bp and chol down so lots of colourful things olive oil oily fish and lean meat.Grains are brilliant too and oats have been proven in tests to lower cholesterol too
